What is soc.culture.galiza?
There is a strong feeling in the Galician community spread all over
the world for the need of a forum where they, and other people, can
exchange information about Galicia, her culture, and the future
development of the country. Although there are presently some mailing
lists which have as discussion topics the Galician language and
culture, there is currently no newsgroup with which Galicians abroad
can keep a link with their homeland for discussing Galician topics in
a broad sense. Those discussions would not be appropriate in a
general newsgroup, such as soc.culture.spain, especially if they are
made using Galician, which most Spaniards will not fully understand.
Discussions would take place mainly in Galician, resorting to
Portuguese, English or Spanish if this is needed for a complete
understanding.
The newsgroup soc.culture.galiza is intended for discussion of topics
related to Galicia, Iberian Peninsula: history, current affairs,
future political and economic development, culture and traditions,
language, and relationships with other countries.
And if you want to find out more about the group's birth you can look it up at Luís Pérez Carrasco's document on GALICIA-L and soc.culture.galiza's preparation.
Group creation
In the Internet, a newsgroup can't be created until the cybercommunity approves
its creation through a vote. In order for this vote to pass, 2/3 of the
valid votes must be in favor of the group creation. Furthermore, the number
of YES votes must be larger by at least one hundred votes than the number
of NO votes.
Our voting took place between March 7th and 26th 1.997, and was managed by Mr Jeremy Billones (billones@PRIMENET.COM) of Usenet Volunteer Votetakers, neutral asociation which takes the count for newsgroups votes. You can see here the CFV (Call For Votes) with which every cybernaut was invited to participate. The result was the following:
- 402 valid votes:
- 380 YES votes.
- 22 NO votes.
- 13 null votes.
You can see both the votes and the voters in the voting act.

Robomoderation
The newsgroup soc.culture.galiza is one of the first Usenet groups to
use modern technology to avoid cross-posted junk mail from reaching your
mail box. We use a robomoderator (a computer program written by
Igor Chudov) to eliminate messages cross-posted to many groups. Not only we
ride you of junk mail, but also, if you pay for time of
connection to the net, we save you some money. The use of a
robomoderator only eliminate articles excessively cross-posted. The
content of the articles is never subject to censorship.
Moderation Policy:
Soc.culture.galiza only employ robomoderation. Human moderation
is NOT included. In case of problems with the moderation software, Ramón Flores Seija (fa2ramon@usc.es) is the person to look after it.
- The robomoderator screens every article submitted to
soc.culture.galiza. It will unequivocally reject any article
crossposted to 4 or more newsgroups other than soc.culture.galiza.
- The robomoderator, when rejecting a submission, shall send the
submission's author a copy of the moderation policy statement and an
explanation as to why the submission was not posted.
Beside this the robomoderator has the following advantages:
- Sends a welcome message the first time an article is posted to the newsgroup; in this welcome, the SCG's web page (this one you're reading right now) URL is indicated, and any other information can be included (FAQ, info for newbies...).
- Makes dialy summaries up from the articles posted to the group.
- Every month makes summaries up from the articles accepted and rejected; these summaries are automatically sent to the newsgroup.
- Automatically makes weekly archives up from this period articles, in HTML format.
Why the name Galiza?
The name Galiza hasn't been chosen to make a political statement. In
general, the names given to the newsgroups correspond to the English name of
the geographical area. However, in our case, using this criteria will lead
to confusion. The English name of our country is Galicia, but this name is
also used to designate a territory in Poland. In order to avoid possible
mistakes, we chose, with the blessings of several internet mentors, to use a
name that would not cause confusion. Galiza represents a reasonable
alternative.
